Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the right to question certain rulings made by the chair umpire, following the system already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
