The White House disclosed the initiation of federal worker terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the official process for letting employees go.

While the official did not specify which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services used by the public and pledged to contest the actions in the legal system.

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be ended before then.

“It is wrong to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government running,” Stier said. “Our flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not at fault for this government shutdown.”
