Navigating Political Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Fundamental Tests of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing basic services: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and making sure smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
